A Kanawha County man has been arrested after troopers said he kidnapped a woman, wrecked her vehicle and then set it on fire.
Norman Lee Stanley, 19, of Cabin Creek was charged with arson and kidnapping following an incident that happened in the early morning hours of Oct. 14 in the Cabin Creek area, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.
West Virginia State Police Trooper B.A. Ward said the victim told authorities that Stanley was drinking and driving her car all over the Cabin Creek area and that she and Stanley got into a verbal argument. The victim said she exited the vehicle and attempted to call her mother, when Stanley grabbed her phone, threw it in the weeds and began beating her. Ward said the victim received bruises and marks on her face.
The victim said she told Stanley she wanted to go home numerous times and he said, "We are going to die tonight" while driving head on at several coal trucks on Cabin Creek.
The victim said that Stanley drove over an embankment, and the vehicle came to a stop. Stanley then allegedly said that they would leave the car where it was, burn it and for her to tell everyone that it had been stolen, the complaint said. The complaint said Stanley then allegedly threatened her, saying that if she didn't comply that he would kill her and her mother.
The victim was able to grab the keys to the car and escape to her mother's home, but when they drove back to where the vehicle had been, they found it burned, the complaint said..
Stanley remained in the South Central Regional Jail on Wednesday.
