Kanawha County commissioners said they were elated to hear that Congress has reached a deal to delay pending flood insurance increases.
The commission said in a news release it has been bombarded with calls from concerned citizens regarding hikes that would occur in rates under the Biggert Waters Act of 2012.
Congress reached a bipartisan deal on Monday that would delay flood insurance rate hikes for about four years to allow FEMA to conduct a feasibility and affordability study.
The commission said many residents had expressed concern about what the new policy would do them and the danger of losing their homes.
The commission said the proposed delay applies to primary, non-repetitive loss residences that are currently grandfathered; all properties sold after July 6, 2012; and all properties that purchased a new policy after July 6, 2012.
“Congress is once again correcting another crises created by them,” Kanawha County Commissioner Kent Carper said in the news release.
