Beckley, Raleigh County , West Virginia
A bridge in Beckley has been named in honor of a volunteer firefighter killed in a 2007 explosion.
Media outlets report that the Fire Captain Fred Burroughs Memorial Bridge was dedicated Saturday. The bridge on the East Beckley Bypass spans Cranberry Creek.
Burroughs was among four people killed when a propane gas explosion leveled the Little General Store in Ghent in January 2007. He was a a member of the Ghent Volunteer Fire Department.
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board used the Ghent explosion to create a training video called "Half an Hour to Tragedy." The title came from the time that passed as propane leaking from a tank filled the store and eventually ignited.
