Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia
Voters are beginning to make their voices heard about a local library-public schools excess levy.
Early voting for a special election on that tax hike started Saturday in Kanawha County.
The proposed levy would prevent budget deficits for both the school district and county library system.
It's estimated the tax increase would pull in more than $24 million for the schools and about $3 million for the libraries.
For a person with a $100,000 home and $15,000 in vehicles, this tax would add on another $125 a year.
So far, there has been a decent turnout with early voting, which election officials said is a growing trend.
The actual election day for the school levy is Nov. 6, and early voting is available at the voter registration office on Quarrier Street in Charleston until then.
If approved, Kanawha County’s excess levy would jump 50 percent.
