It was a really exciting night at Herbert Hoover High School on Friday, as two major celebrations were underway - homecoming and the school's 50th birthday.
And what better way to celebrate the milestone than to bring back 50 years of homecoming royalty to the field at Herbert Hoover High School.
Beverly Hughes-Huffman was crowned homecoming queen in 1963. She was the school's first, and she was there to see the newest queen crowned at half-time.
“It's really nice, because you have to realize it's been 50 years and that's a long time,” she said. “I feel very fortunate to be here. I really do."
It’s a special memory many of these ladies have held close over the years – women like Vivian Samples-Maynor and Jill Maynor-Grandchamp, two generations of homecoming queens.
“It's so exciting to be able to share it with her,” Maynor-Grandchamp said. “This is such a strong sense of community and you got really nostalgic seeing the current homecoming court lining up and getting ready to go."
The night brought back many emotional memories for the ladies too.
“I honestly did not think, so, then I started crying," Kylee Clark, the school’s 2007 homecoming queen, said.
While many of these ladies have never met, they all share a special bond, and made more memories they will continue to share for many years to come.
“We've gotten back a little over 40, with two that had passed on, so the girls who put this together did a wonderful job," Grandchamp said.
Amber Smith was crowned this year’s homecoming queen. She was crowned by last year's winner and the school's first queen, Beverly Hughes-Huffman.
