Charleston police said a gun was taken away from a student at Capital High School last week.
Charleston police and the school district told Eyewitness News that the student made no threats and claimed to have found the 9 millimeter pistol on the way to school.
The gun was reportedly unloaded when a school administrator and the school resource officer isolated and searched the 16-year-old boy and a backpack.
The school board attorney said they now believe the student intended to sell it to someone at the school.
"It's one of the worst things that can happen short of a school shooting," Charleston Police Department Sgt. G. L. Henderson said. "However, he wasn't mad at anybody, He didn't threaten anybody.. He just didn't want to lose the pistol, he said he had found."
The student, who has not been identified, will be subject to school discipline and criminal charges. Eyewitness News was told parents of other students were not informed of the incident.
Capital High Principal Clinton Giles said it was a stupid act, but the student did not brandish the weapon, was not angry and made no threats. Giles told Eyewitness News that he thinks the school is safer than some east and west side neighborhoods where students live.
This made the fourth gun found in a West Virginia school this school year.
