Organizations came together in Charleston on Tuesday as part of a new partnership with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection's E3 West Virginia Program to help build sustainable communities.
E3 West Virginia stands for economy, energy and environment.
The department got commitments from organizations such as Appalachian Power, Bridgemont Community and Technical College and the West Virginia Department of Commerce, just to name a few, to help communities become more sustainable and reduce their energy consumption.
Since 2010, E3 West Virginia has worked in six counties in the state at 22 government facilities and 56 manufacturing facilities with potential energy savings of $9.6 million.
Officials said they're helping these groups reduce their energy consumption whether it be electricity, natural gas or water.
"We also show them ways to reduce their water consumption, minimize the materials that they're generating that are eventually just going to West Virginia landfills anyway," said Greg Adolfson, Sustainability Officer for the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection. "All of that has an affect to that person's fiscal financial bottom line. So our goal is to improve that financial bottom line where they can take money and start building a more sustainable community."
The group said they're looking at working in two to four more counties in the state but want to work with ones that are already on track to becoming more sustainable.
