Kentucky lawmakers are being pressed to return more of the state's coal severance tax directly to coal-producing counties.
The Kentucky Coal County Coalition sent a recently approved resolution to the General Assembly asking legislators to give more economic help to the state's coal counties. Currently, roughly half of the tax collected goes to Frankfort and half to the counties where it's produced.
The Coal County Coalition resolution says that the amount collected by the state tax on coal has dropped from $310 million in 2011-2012 to $210 million in 2013-2014.
The Kentucky General Assembly took $2.5 million in coal severance funds this year for renovations to Rupp Arena in Lexington.
Daviess Judge-Executive Al Mattingly told The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer he doubts that anything will be done by lawmakers.
