Skywatchers in our region may be able to get a view of a partial lunar eclipse Friday evening.
The eclipse begins at 6:14 p.m. and the full moon is set to rise at 6:34 p.m. in Charleston.
An eclipse is a darkening of the moon as it passes through the shadow of the earth cast from the sun.
The eclipse will be most noticeable when it reaches maximum at 7:50 p.m., and will end at 9:52 p.m.
"At this time you should notice a distinct darkening of the bottom of Luna’s disc," according to Geoff Chester of the U.S. Naval Observatory. "The shading will be quite subtle, but it should be readily apparent when compared to the northern limb. The darkening will then slowly shift to the southwestern limb before the eclipse ends at 9:52 pm."
However, since the sun does not set until 6:44 p.m. in our area, the majority of the eclipse will coincide with twilight and be less noticeable and more of a subtle eclipse than usual, as the moon is low in the sky and obscured by atmospheric dust.
If you get any photo's of tonight's eclipse, feel free to send them to our See It, Shoot It, Send It page.
