Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia
The verdict is in, and a Huntington man has been convicted of beating to death a man in a wheelchair.
It was a guilty verdict for Edward Jesse Dreyfus, and a victory for the family of Otis Clay.
"It's a victory for our family and I feel much safer," Michael Trogdon, Clay’s nephew, said.
Clay, 66, was severely beaten by Dreyfus with a baseball bat several times in April of last year.
"This was a terrible, terrible tragedy that should not have happened,” Chris Chiles, the prosecuting attorney, said. “The jury came back with the right verdict."
And while the police searched frantically for the suspect, the family searched for answers.
It was closure for a family who have been through a lot.
"It's been like nothing I've ever dealt with before,” Trogdon said. “The jury did their job, and you can feel safe in your homes because of Mr. Chiles. He does his job. That's all I can say right now."
A mercy hearing for Dreyfus has been scheduled for next week.
A jury has found a man guilty in the beating death of a Huntington man.
The jury deliberated about three hours Friday before finding Edward "Jesse" Dreyfuse, 47, guilty of murder and burglary charges.
Dreyfuse was charged in the beating death of Otis Clay, Jr., 66, who later died from his injuries. Clay was beaten with a baseball bat at his home in Huntington in April 2012.
A mercy hearing is scheduled for Dreyfuse next Friday to determine if leniency will be applied to sentencing.
