Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia
More than half of the staff at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers office in Huntington was furloughed during the recent federal government shutdown.
On Thursday, it was back to work after a pretty unusual break.
Chuck Minsker works out of the Corps office in Huntington. For the past two weeks and two days, he has been doing a different line of work.
"Doing the honey dew list my wife put together for me," he said
The Corp furloughed 450 out of 800 workers.
Brian Maka, of the Corps, said most of the staff kept on was to ensure safety to the public with waterflow projects.
"Everything else was slow, or not getting done at all," he said.
Minsker said it’s an unfortunate because most of the workers have a passion for what they do.
"It’s more annoying than frustrating,” he said. “There's work piled up and you can’t do it, so you just have to wait."
And now that the waiting's over, the catching up has begun.
"Start chipping away at the pile," he said.
Government workers will receive back pay for the days they missed.
