The Kanawha County Board of Education held its meeting Thursday night.
One thing on their agenda that was stirring up a lot of debate was the school calendar.
The first day of the school year was Aug. 9, compared to last year's Aug. 17 starting date.
The board is holding two meetings, one which was Thursday night, to discuss the calendar options.
Many parents and teachers expressed their concerns about the school year starting too early this year and affecting vacation time.
Dr. Ron Duerring said the early start has its benefits.
“One, it gives us more time with the students when we do the state testing program,” he said. “That helps. Again, it allows students to get everything over at Christmas break and go home and enjoy that time, and have all their stuff due before they go home for Christmas."
There are currently three school calendar options on the table for Kanwha County.
The board will hear again for the public and vote on the matter next month.
