About 400 national parks have reopened. The end of the federal government shutdown means the local park service is up against the weekend with two major events planned.
The 16 days of shutdown saw the leaves turn in a partially closed New River Gorge National River. About 100 furloughed federal park workers returned to the job Thursday.
The shutdown closed visitor centers, campgrounds and restrooms in the park, but there was no attempt to block access to outdoor sites. Tourists who had more problems at other national parks were glad to see it open.
