An elderly woman was hit and killed Thursday morning while trying to cross the street in Charleston.
"Oh my God, I got to go help," said Nina Claytor, who tried to save the victim's life.
Claytor said Thursday morning turned into a nightmare.
"This was a beautiful day and it turned into tragedy and we're just going to pray for both of the families," she said.
Claytor was getting ready to get on the bus when she saw an elderly woman laying in the middle of Greenbrier Street. The woman had just been hit by an SUV.
Claytor said she rushed to her side and began administering CPR.
"No response. No shaking of her head, no movement in her body," she said.
It was too late and the woman died.
Claytor said it's hard to hold back tears. "Because I tried to help her. I tried. I couldn't. It's going to be a sad day for me."
Claytor said this intersection at Virginia Street is dangerous and she's seen a lot of people almost get hit by speeding cars.
"People come off the interstate, flying like a speedway and they don't have control of their car," she said. "By the time they get down here it's too late. If you're crossing either you're going to get hit or you're just going to have to jump out of the way."
Charleston police are calling this a freak accident and are still trying to figure out how it happened. They said the driver of the SUV is distraught and is cooperating with the investigation.
"We'll reconstruct the scene," said Sgt. Nick Null, Charleston Police Department. "We'll get a speed for the vehicle. There should be video from the state capitol. We'll watch it and put everything together, do another interview or two."
For Claytor she has this message for the victim, the woman she tried to save: "God bless you and you've gone on home now. Rest in peace. Rest in Heaven."
Police haven't identified the victim until her family is notified. They also haven't identified the person driving the SUV. Police are still investigating whether or not to file any charges.
An elderly woman was killed after being struck by an SUV on Charleston's East End early Thursday.
The 911 call was reported about 7:40 a.m., dispatchers said. The accident happened at the intersection of Virginia Street East and Greenbrier Street in Charleston, just across from the state Capitol complex.
The woman was reportedly crossing the road when she was struck. Her name has not been released, pending family notification.
