Furloughed workers in Huntington got a glimmer of good news Wednesday. For the past three Wednesdays, River and Rail Bakery in Heritage Station has provided free lunches for furloughed workers.
The free lunches began when they had an excess of brats a couple weeks ago and cooked those up to give away, but wanted to keep it going for those workers who have been furloughed, River and Rail Bakery Owner Kim Baker said.
The business has had several regular customers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which had furloughed hundreds of workers. Employees with the Veterans Benefits Administration were also part of the furlough.
"We just hope that the people come in and take advantage of what we're doing, and we hope that we in some small way are able to help them through the hardship that they're facing," said Baker.
Today's free lunch was a made from scratch fire-roasted tomato soup with grilled cheese.
