There is a new tool to aid first responders during an emergency.
Two HealthNet helicopters are now equipped to respond to emergencies during poor weather conditions.
The choppers have a new method of flight operation know as instrument flight rules or “IFR.” It allows emergency medical services flights to respond when there is poor visibility or low hanging clouds.
To use the new rules, pilots must undergo specialized extensive in-flight training sessions simulating poor weather conditions, according to a news release from HealthNet. During the training, pilots use “foggles,” which are goggle-type glasses that imitate clouds and fog, and learn how to navigate without any ground references.
