The unmistakable sound of marching band music filled the air in part of Kanawha County Saturday.
West Virginia State University invited 14 local high school bands to compete at Dickerson Stadium on the Institute campus.
About 1,000 students from those bands participated in the Cavalcade of Bands Southwest Regional Band Festival.
The college was glad students could showcase their accomplishments and school pride.
"Our band is sort of really close with the St. Albans band, so we know a lot of people here,” Hannah Curry, a Nitro High drum major, said. “We just love seeing everybody around."
WVSU's band also performed for the crowds.
This was the first year for this marching band event at university.
