The heart of the story in "Seussical, Jr." is right out of one of Dr. Seuss' most famous books. An elephant named Horton hears a tiny voice on a speck of dust. It turns out there's an entire world that we can't see, so Horton works to save his new friends, proving that a person is a person no matter how small.
"The play is a combination of Dr. Seuss stories," Noah Gillispie (Horton) said. "'Horton Hears a Who', 'Horton Sits on the Egg', Gertrude McFuzz, with Mayzie, there's tons of Whos. It's gonna be...yeah, it's cool."
The Children's Theatre of Charleston production features dozens of characters, including some of Dr. Seuss's most familiar stars. The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz and even the Grinch are among those who work to help...or hinder Horton as he tries to save the dust speck and the flower he placed it on.
"Everyone will like the show," Devin Elliott (Gertrude McFuzz) said. "There's something for everyone in it. I mean, there's a lot of action. It's a comedy, it's a love story. Everything is stuck in there."
Trust, friendship and loyalty. Those are the important lessons taught by "Seussical, Jr." through music, dancing and some of Dr. Seuss' greatest ideas.
"There's nothing like working with young actors," Debbie Haught, the show's director said. "They still understand play. And they still understand imagination. Especially in this show, that's what this show is all about. It's about imagination. The thinks you can think."
