State Auditor Dave Yost says he's disappointed that another "count week" has rolled around in Ohio in which schools are pulling out the stops to maximize attendance totals used to determine their state funding.
Yost said in a Wednesday interview he had hoped count weeks were a thing of the past after his statewide investigation identified more than 70 Ohio schools or districts that made attendance reporting errors and nine that "scrubbed" their rolls by removing poor-performing students to boost performance ratings.
The probe completed this spring was prompted by alleged attendance manipulation in Columbus that is still being investigated.
Yost said a policy change beginning in 2015 basing school funding on three attendance-tracking periods instead of one is a positive step -- but weekly reports should ultimately determine funding.
