Charleston , Kanawha County , West Virginia
The U.S..Attorney's office based at the Byrd Federal Courthouse in Charleston has been very busy over the past several weeks. High profile cases, including investigations involving a former Mingo County Circuit Court Judge and County Commissioner, have been in the spotlight.
"The FBI and the West Virginia State Police are doing a fantastic job, along with Booth Goodwin, in cleaning this up," Benjamin Cisco of Matewan said. "It's going to be tough but I think as citizens of Mingo County and the investigators we can work to make this a better county."
But the partial government shutdown may slow down further progress in Mingo County, at least until its over.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin says the partial government shutdown is making it more difficult for his office to conduct its business. He says the temporary layoffs make it harder to move forward in investigations, like the probe into Mingo County corruption.
"We're doing our very best not to lose momentum and we'll continue to work as hard as we can as fast as we can on important investigations like that and on important issues like prescription drug abuse," Goodwin said.
20 of Goodwin's 68 employees have been furloughed because of the shutdown. He says the work they do is vitally important and that his office's effectiveness will be hampered until they're back on the job.
"These people are doing vital work for the American people and they're doing important work," Goodwin said. "So, it's really greatly limiting us in our ability to really do what we should be doing on behalf of the American people."
