The Mountain State celebrated World Habitat Day Monday.
Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin signed the proclamation at a special ceremony with members of Habitat for Humanity.
The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day.
The purpose is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all to have adequate shelter.
Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
As part of West Virginia's day to serve, employees of the Public Service Commission raised money for the science program at Piedmont Elementary School.
Those funds will be used to purchase nine microscopes, science lab lessons and supplies for the third through fifth grade classes.
The school doesn't do fundraisers out of safety concerns for the students, so it relies on these kinds of donations.
