City elections would match with county and state contests beginning in 2018 under a proposed ordinance discussed Monday evening at Charleston City Council.
Council members said the ordinance would save the city money and increase voter turnout.
Neighbors were able to give their opinions on the ordinance during a public hearing.
The city currently conducts its own primary and general elections that ost taxpayers at least $100,000 per election.
Comments from Monday night's hearing will be considered as the bill moves through the city council committees.
If the bill is passed in committee, then it will return to the full council for a final vote.
