The city of Charleston is making strides to revitalize the West Side.
The Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority hosted an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony Monday morning at the Switzer Center for the newest new affordable housing complex on the West Side.
Mayor Danny Jones, U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin and other state dignitaries took a tour of Greystone Apartments, a seven-building complex across from Washington Street West, which has 28 units for rent.
The completion of the low to moderate housing complex puts and end to phase seven of the West Side redevelopment project, which over the last eight years included the construction of Orchard and Washington Manors.
Greystone Apartments replaces what was once vacant and abandoned homes, which were seen as eyesores in the community. Kitty Dooley, chairwoman of the Board of Commissioners of the Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority, said the new apartment units will add value to the neighborhood.
"We had apartments where there were long corridors and hallways that allowed for crime and criminal elements to gather and what we've done is made apartments where everyone has a single entrance," Dooley said.
The apartments also have their own front and backyard spaces. Some units even have accommodations for the hearing impaired. Twenty-eight apartments are available for rent at the end of the month.
Phase eight of the revitalization project consists of a new community across from Greystone.
