Some public school students in Mingo County will be randomly tested for drugs and alcohol.
A new policy requires random drug tests for student-athletes, students who participate in extracurricular activities and students who drive to school. Parents also can volunteer their children for the test selection process.
Schools Superintendent Randy Keathley tells the Charleston Gazette that school officials hope early intervention will prevent students from becoming substance abusers as adults.
The policy applies only to high school students this year. Director of student services Dreama Dempsey tells the newspaper that the testing will be expanded to seventh-graders and eighth-graders next school year.
Several other school systems also drug test students, including Cabell, Putnam and Logan counties.
