While nationally, it appears the government shutdown poses a serious threat to the federally-funded Meals on Wheels programs, it looks like those programs around Charleston could weather even a prolonged shutdown.
However, that comes as little consolation to concerned seniors.
The national head of a group representing 5000 Meals on Wheels programs warns a long government shutdown could seriously hurt them in all 50 states, but Putnam Aging and Kanawha Valley Senior Services said meal programs in and around Kanawha County could keep operating even if the deadlock, and lack of federal reimbursement, goes a few months.
But that doesn't mean they like it. People who use the senior nutrition programs were not happy with Washington.
But at Tiskelwah Senior Center, feeding 250 people at home and on site, the word was the food will keep coming, unless the deadlock turns into a multi-month problem.
