It may not seem like it, but cooler temperatures are just around the corner, and a state utility assistance program is warming up its efforts to help West Virginia families.
Dollar Energy Fund began providing utility assistance grants for the 2013-2014 year on Thursday.
The program allows for households with incomes at or below the federal poverty level and who have received utility-termination notices to apply for funding.
Each household may apply once per utility, including water, electric, and gas, per year between now and Sept. 30, 2014, to avoid termination.
The maximum grant amount is $500.
Due to demand for funding to cover heating termination notices in the later months of winter, this year Appalachian Power will be delaying the opening of grants for their customers until Dec. 1 and reducing the maximum grant to $300.
Utility customers are able to contribute a dollar or more to dollar energy fund through their monthly utility bill.
