Two members of Congress representing West Virginia have said they will not accept pay during the government shutdown.
West Virginia Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito said she issued a letter requesting that her congressional pay be suspended until the federal government shutdown ends.
Meanwhile, Sen. Joe Manchin will donate his salary during the shutdown to "Save the Children", according to a Twitter post by Hoppy Kercheval with MetroNews.
On Tuesday in a post on Capito's Facebook page, Capito said, "Today, I sent a letter to the Chief Adminstrative Officer of the House requesting that my congressional pay be suspended until the government shutdown ends. After the shutdown ends, I will donate this portion of my salary to charity."
The Facebook post had received nearly 4,000 likes, 2,000 shares and 600 comments by Thursday.
Also on Tuesday, Capito emailed the following statement to the media: "“I have said repeatedly that I oppose a government shutdown. Congress is supposed to be about fixing problems and negotiating to a better end. Unfortunately, this is entirely the gridlock that West Virginians have come to resent in Washington. Tomorrow is a new day and my hope is we solve this crisis quickly.”
Capito represents the people of West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District in the 113th Congress.
