It is a waiting game for hundreds of federal employees in Huntington potentially affected by the government shutdown.
A representative from the Huntington office for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers told Eyewitness News that 300 exempted employees would not be affected by furloughs, and about 450 non-exempted employees are affected. Those numbers are subject to change at any time.
At the VA Medical Center, no positions are currently affected, since funding for the center is approved a year in advance.
However, in the regional benefits office downtown, an extended shutdown could affect some jobs. The center released the following statement in regards to the government shutdown:
“Regarding benefits payments administered by the Veterans Benefits Administration: Claims processing and payments in the compensation, pension, education, and vocational rehabilitation programs are anticipated to continue through late October. However, in the event of a prolonged shutdown, claims processing and payments in these programs would be suspended as available funding is exhausted,” the statement said.
