The impact of the government shutdown is being felt all across the country, including right here in West Virginia.
One of the organizations dealing with the shutdown firsthand is the West Virginia National Guard. Hundreds of guard personnel were told they didn't need to come to work on Tuesday, and hundreds more will know when they will get paid.
About 195 Title 32 Civilians at the 130th Airlift Wing were given furlough notices Tuesday morning. They are dual status technicians and that means in order for them to have a job with the 130th Airlift Wing, they have to be members of the West Virginia National Guard.
About a thousand civilian technicians statewide received the notices on Tuesday and that includes 195 in Charleston.
Adam Harper is the president of the Association of Civilian Technicians Mountaineer Chapter. He said they had to deal with furloughs once before this year with the sequestration so he is not surprised by this latest round of furloughs.
"We've already furloughed once this year, so we're kind of back in this," he said. "It's not new ground now. But we're going to deal with it, and this is what we do so we'll be here waiting to be told to come back to work.
"It's frustrating obviously, but we remind everybody that now is the time, we've got plenty of free time to go home and call our representatives and remind them of what's happening here," he said.
The last furlough lasted about six days. No one knows how long this one will last.
Harper has a wife and son and said right now they are just trying to take it day by day to see what happens.
