A fireball likely streaked across the night sky around 11:30 p.m. Friday night, prompting many in the area to wonder what on earth they had just seen. The American Meteor Society received 390 reports on the incident, some from as far northwest as Michigan and as far southeast as North Carolina.
The greatest concentration of sightings were from Ohio, although several were submitted from West Virginia as well. WCHS received several emails and Facebook postings last night reporting what they had just seen in the sky.
A fireball is a meteor that appears brighter than usual. The International Astronomical Union defines a fireball as "a meteor brighter than any of the planets".
There are estimated to be around 500,000 fireballs a year but, many go unnoticed. Interestingly, another fireball was sighted Thursday morning in the Midwest, especially around the Chicago area. The AMS received over 700 reports from that incident, which occurred only 36 hours earlier than the one seen in our region.
