The city of Charleston launched a new trash bag distribution program in early September, but it was not without its problems.
With the old system, if you needed a trash or recycle bag you could get one from the city of Charleston. Now, those bags are being handed out by five retailers but only to those with a voucher.
Vouchers were mailed Sept. 3 to 18,266 addresses. Each household receives three vouchers, twice a year, which can be traded in for trash and recycle bags. One voucher can be redeemed for two sets of black trash bags and one set of clear recycling bags.
Although the WasteZero program is only three weeks old, it was off to a rough start. Gary Tyson, chief operating officer at WasteZero, said the company was not prepared for the surge of people redeeming their vouchers.
"We ended up driving more volumes of trash bags then we excepted at WasteZero based on the history of our communities," Tyson said. "We expected a lower volume at first. The volume surprised us and as a result we had some stock outs at some of our retailers."
Tyson said all of the Charleston locations are now stocked with bags. He also said WasteZero will be better prepared in February, when the second set of vouchers will be mailed. Current vouchers expire in January.
Customers with vouchers for trash bags can pick them up at the following locations:
* Foodland at 5003 MacCorkle Ave in Kanawha City
* The Purple Onion, 800 Smith St.
* Drug Emporium, 5101 MacCorkle Ave. SE
* Drug Emporium, 1603 Kanawha Blvd. W
* F.M. Pile Hardware - 1625 Washington St. W.
To qualify for a voucher, you must be current on your monthly refuse fees.
