A local group is working to fight the methamphetamine problem in West Virginia.
The West Virginia Intervention on Meth Committee met Wednesday morning to discuss what actions communities across the nation are doing to crack down on meth. Committee members sat down to brainstorm possible solutions. They spoke with state leaders in Kentucky and Oregon to find out how those states are tackling the meth problem, and the challenges they faced.
Judy Crabtree, coordinator of the West Virginia committee, said to prevent meth from causing more destruction to families, communities and the local economy, the prescription drug problem must be addressed.
"Folks have found a way to get around it, Crabtree said. "They buy their legal amount and they get a group of people to go and buy their legal amount and then they re-sell those to the meth makers. It's sort of a little industry. "
The West Virginia Intervention on Meth Committee has been meeting since June to try to start a discussion about drugs in communities across the state. Crabtree said while some small counties might not be affected by meth, they likely will.
Law enforcement officers in the Mountain State made 271 meth bust in 2012.
