The man wanted in connection with a Tuesday carjacking in Elkview was arrested in Ohio.
Anthony Konopinski, 21, of Seville, Ohio, was arrested in Brooklyn Heights, Ohio, about 5:30 a.m. driving the vehicle he stole from the Kroger at the Crossing Mall in Elkview, the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies said the car was severely damaged when it was recovered. The car was stolen from an 84-year-old man who had just purchased gas at a Kroger.
Konopinski was involved in a pursuit in the Cleveland area early Wednesday morning, but was able to escape, deputies said. Brooklyn Heights Police were then dispatched to a report of a broken down car. Konopinski gave police a false ID, and then tried to flee on foot but was captured, deputies said.
Deputies said he also was carrying a stolen purse from Logan, and may have trashed a hotel room in Logan County.
In Ohio, he is now charged with resisting arrest, falsification, felony drug possession and receiving stolen property.
Kanawha County deputies have issued an arrest warrant for a man they said stole a vehicle from an elderly man Tuesday.
Deputies are seeking Anthony Konopinski, 21, of Seville, Ohio, in connection with a carjacking that happened about 9:45 a.m. at the Kroger at the Crossing Mall in Elkview according to a news release from Cpl. Brian Humphreys of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office.
The carjacking occurred after an 84-year-old had been putting gas in his vehicle at Kroger. When the man went to pay the cashier, a white male in a red, zip-up sweatshirt stole his vehicle, Humphreys said.
The stolen vehicle was a beige 2001 Nissan Sentra.
Deputies reviewed surveillance footage from Kroger and nearby businesses and were able to track down other vehciles that the suspect had been around, question those people and confirm the suspect's identity.
Konopinski is also wanted in the state of Ohio for numerous charges and has relatives in the Morgantown and Logan areas of West Virginia, Humphreys said.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts should call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office at 304-357-0169.
