Kanawha County deputies were at a Kanawha County elementary school Tuesday after an unfounded report that a weapon was brought to the school Monday.
Deputies were at Shoals Elementary School in Mink Shoals Tuesday after they said a third grade boy told his parents that another third grade boy had shown him a gun inside his backpack, Cpl. Brian Humphreys of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office said. The parents then notified the school personnel, who in turned called deputies. The alleged incident happened at the end of the day Monday
Deputies were able to question the student who allegedly produced the gun and his family early Tuesday. No weapons were located in connection with the incident, and no charges are expected to be filed at this time.
In response to Monday's incident, deputies were scheduled to be at the school throughout the day on Tuesday. The possibility that a weapon was present at the school on Monday is still being explored, Humphreys said.
Bob Calhoun, the executive director of elementary education for Kanawha County Schools, told Eyewitness News that a student reported that another student had some type of weapon at the school Monday. Deputies searched the student in question and reported to the student's home and spoke with the parents of that individual, Calhoun said.
The student in question was in school Tuesday, Calhoun said. He added that no weapon was found at the school.
Kanawha County deputies, administrators at Shaols Elementary School and the Kanawha County Board of Education continue to investigate.
If you have any information about this incident or any knowledge or firearms on school property in violation of the law, call the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office at 304-357-0169.
