Many of the latest allegations in Mingo County center around fallen Sheriff Eugene Crum, who was murdered in April. His family is speaking out, saying they believe Crum is turning into a fall guy, because he's not here to defend himself.
"Everybody that knew my grandpa knew he would never do anything like this and I feel like a lot of people are trying to put this on someone who isn't here to defend himself," Crum's grandson, Joseph Hall, said.
Federal court documents allege Crum bought illegal prescription pills from a man named George White, then used White's sign shop for campaign posters in 2012. Crum allegedly owed White $3,000 but instead of paying the bill, Crum is accusing of having White arrested for selling drugs. The federal information alleges White started speaking with the FBI regarding Crum's alleged drug use and that several high powered public officials in Mingo County conspired to offer White leniency if he would stop talking and fire his attorney.
Crum's family members showed Eyewitness News a copy of a check paid to White for campaign signs, dated Jan. 24, 2012. The check was in the amount of $3,000. Rosie Crum said the check proves her husband did not owe White anything. Eyewitness News could not verify if there were other outstanding bills to the sign shop.
"George White is a dope head, a drug dealer and a liar," Hall said. "It's hard to believe that someone would believe him over my pawpaw."
Crum's family members also said they have always believed that Tennis Maynard, the man accused in Crum's murder, was put up to the crime. They said they believe that now more than ever. That theory has never been mentioned in court.
