Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia
Going to the doctor couldn't get much easier for students in many Cabell County schools.
Valley Health offers school-based health centers at Southside Elementary and Huntington Middle School, and Huntington High School and Cabell Midland High School. Students can get any services that they would at their primary care physicians' office, and also dental, nutrition, and behavioral health services.
"Across the state, we are finding that a collaboration with a school-based health center helps improve dropout rates because students can get care that they need without leaving the school," Melanie Hall, Valley Health health center administrator, said,
Valley Health now has partnerships with schools in Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, and Putnam counties. It's more convenient for students and parents.
"Parents who work dont' have to take time off work to go get the child, they can be seen at the school health center and get the care they need, the prescription, whatever, and go right back to class," Hall said.
Ty Salmons took advantage of a quick checkup from a Valley Healthy nurse practitioner at Cabell Midland Thursday. He said he likes the convenience of the school-based health center.
Students can also can get vaccines and immunizations, and it's open to everyone at the school.
"It's not just a particular available to a certain economic group or a certain age group, It is to all economic levels, age levels, all faculty, all staff all students of that health center," Hall said.
Parents just have to sign a consent form each school year for their child to be eligible to participate.
