Jackson , Jackson County , Ohio
A major manufacturer is shutting down in southern Ohio.
Masco Cabinetry announced they are shutting down their Merillat facility in Jackson.
A cloudy sky hung over the manufacturing facility Wednesday, the day after about 200 employees learned they will soon be out of work.
People in Jackson said the shutdown will be a huge blow to other businesses in the area.
18 salaried and 168 hourly Masco Cabinetry employees will be out of a job, as managers said the plant will be idled over the next several months.
Jackson's Mayor Randy Heath said the challenge for him is to keep the workers from moving away.
"There are people there that have been there since it opened 35 years ago," Heath said.
While discouraging, the mayor and others living in Jackson said they will adjust, but it won't be easy.
Masco's president released a statement, which said, “Deciding to close a facility is never easy, but doing so will allow for greater efficiencies within the company overall."
A Jackson County, Ohio, manufacturing plant will soon close, leaving nearly 200 employees without a job.
The Merillat Plant in Jackson will close in several months, according to a news release from parent company Masco Cabinetry. The closure of the facility will leave 168 hourly employees and 18 salaried workers unemployed.
Masco did not give a reason for the plant's closure, but President Rick Roetken released a statement.
"Masco Cabinetry has continued to evaluate our manufacturing needs, processes and strategy. Deciding to close a facility is never easy, but doing so will allow for greater efficiencies within the company overall,” the statement said.
Employment opportunities will be available on a needed basis as production at the plant is slowed down.
The company was built in 1976 and produces solid oak frames.
