The Spirit of West Virginia, the last remaining commercial vessel on the Kanawha River, has been sold and will be headed to Lousiana, its owners said.
Dick and Nancy Daugherty said they sold their beloved sternwheeler due to the high cost of insurance, maintenance, fuel and personal time.
“She will be heading out after public rides at the Doo Wop car show the first week of October,” Dick Daughtery said in a news release. “It is a bittersweet moment for us personally. We have really enjoyed sharing our river heritage for the last four years on an authentic sternwheeler from Montgomery to Point Pleasant and every community in between.”
The Daughterys said they are particularly proud to have served during the sesquicentennial and in Dunbar, which has been nationally recognized as the “City of Sternwheelers.”
The couple said they have other full-time business obligations and family and grandchildren out of state.
Public rides will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Dunbar Fall Festival at Dunbar Landing and the Rod Run & Doo Wop car show in Charleston on Oct. 3, 4 and 5.
