A large group of eighth-graders received an important lesson Monday in democracy.
On Monday morning, 250 eighth-graders from Roane, Raleigh and Cabell counties turned out at the West Virginia Culture Center for Citizenship Day.
It was a chance for students to learn what it means to be good citizens and why the constitution is important.
They participated in activities centered around civics education, patriotism and history.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin gave the keynote remarks.
"America is really about those ideals that are embodied in the constitution. It's what has made us what we are today. It's what is going to propel us into the future," Goodwin said.
Students also participated in a mock legislature and toured the West Virginia state archives and West Virginia State Museum.
In 2005, a law went into effect, making it a requirement that all publicly funded educational institutions provide educational programming on this day every year.
