Saturday was the kickoff for the Upward Bound program's annual leadership summit.
The event was held at West Virginia State University in Institute, and high school students and their parents had the opportunity to attend workshops preparing them for college.
Former U.S. Army Private First Class and Iraq war POW Jessica Lynch spoke at lunch.
Lynch said the key behind Saturday's speech was perseverance.
"Whatever situation you might be facing, it's just how to overcome that and look at life with a brighter side of it,” she said. “Just smile, go on, strive and continue on."
Lynch said she hopes the students take home the message to never give up.
