Parents are concerned for their children's health after they said they found mold in South Charleston Middle School.
"There's some serious need for immediate repairs, David Haden, a concerned parent, said. "These are not things that can be put off."
Haden said they have found what he believes to be mold in classrooms, hallways, and the auditorium.
"There are serious water leaks that were supposed to have been addressed last spring and they've not been addressed," he said.
Haden said he personally met with the school board last year to talk about some repairs -- some of which he said were fixed. But when it comes to the mold situation, he said not much has been done.
Haden was not alone in his concern.
"They ought to consider tearing this building down. It's in really poor shape," Jack Gray, a concerned grandparent, said. "And if they aren't going to put the money into maintaining it, they will eventually be forced to tear it down. I just don't think that there's much effort being made."
While the parents hope the school board comes through to help with this mold problem. They know the board is not the only source of help and improvement.
"The community's got to get involved," Gray said. "That's one of the problems we've been having is trying to get more parents to come out and get involved. If they don't, they're not going to see a change. This is what they're going to get in the future."
Eyewitness News reached out to the Kanawha County School Board, but members who know about the mold were not able to comment
