Members of the Sissonville Volunteer Fire Department can identify with what firefighters with the Blaine, Ky., Volunteer Fire Department are going through after a blaze caused extensive damage at their station and destroyed two fire engines.
Similar to what happened in Blaine on Thursday, the Sissonville Volunteer Fire Department also lost all its equipment in a fire. The Sissonville department lost $2 million worth of equipment when an electrical fire sparked in Oct. 1, 2010.
Now Sissonville volunteer firefighters have a new building and new hope for firefighters in Blaine, Ky. Tom Miller, secretary of the board of directors with the Sissonville Volunteer Fire Department, said patience is crucial.
Miller said the next step for the Blaine volunteers is to sift through debris and reconstruct what is left. He said it's important to assess the damage by checking records, inventory lists and going through old photographs.
Miller said moving back into a new building isn't the end of the rebuilding process and the Sissonville department is still recuperating from its 2010 fire.
"We regrouped ourselves," Miller said. "We realized we were knocked down, but we weren't knocked out. It's in the spirit of a volunteer firefighter to carry on in the face of adversity."
Miller said dealing with a fire can be daunting, especially for small departments struggling financially. Word of the tragedy in Blaine has already spread to fire departments across the nation and help will be on the way soon, Miller said.
