Blaine , Lawrence County , Kentucky
The Blaine Volunteer Fire Department in Lawrence County, Ky., suffered extensive damage in a blaze that destroyed two firetrucks, the fire department's chief said.
Fire Chief Butch Smith said the fire that he discovered about 6 a.m. Thursday is considered suspicious. He said he received a call about a water leak at the station. When he arrived, he said, he saw smoke and felt heat coming out the front door of the station. He called dispatch for assistance.
Four fire departments, Webbville, Red Bush, Hitchins and Louisa, responded and battled the blaze. The closest station to the fire department is 12 miles away.
The chief said two firetrucks inside the station were destroyed; a third truck may be salvageable. Fortunately, the fire department had a sport utility vehicle and a rescue truck parked outside, and they were not damaged. Smith said the inside of the station suffered extensive damage.
Kentucky State Police are at the scene of the fire and are investigating.
Meanwhile, the Webbville and Red Bush fire departments will be handling calls for the Blaine Volunteer Fire Department on an interim basis.
Raymond Osborne, a firefighter at the station for more than 20 years, said, while fire marshals investigate, he is angry.
"I just hope they catch them,” Osborne said. “Lock them up forever. I don't care!"
Volunteers were upset, and so were the people living in Blaine.
Patrick Price, a local resident, was concerned, since Blaine is in a rural area.
He put it bluntly.
"It’s very screwed up," he said. "If anyone's house catches on fire, we’ll be waiting a while."
