Police say there has been a spike in purse snatchings and other petty crimes, all across the region.
They're classified as petit larceny, but, for the victims, the crimes can have lasting effects and can cause a major inconvenience.
Bobbie Legg of Campbells Creek is just the latest person to fall victim to a purse snatching.
“I'm sure they were pros at what they were doing,” she said.
Legg was with a group of friends at the Bob Evans in Kanawha City Wednesday morning. Her purse was on the floor beside her chair.
“I moved my chair bag and realized my handbag was gone,” she said.
She said two women in a table behind her, who didn't order anything, were seen on surveillance video grabbing and taking off with her purse. It had $100 cash in it, her cell phone, car keys and all of her debit and credit cards, one of which the women used about 10 minutes later at the Exxon in Marmet.
"It’s your cards and your ID, and my license and Social Security card,” she said. “It’s a real headache, and they probably don't even want it. They just want your money.”
Police said these types of crimes are happening more frequently.
“What is happening typically, these individuals are waiting for people to sit something down and they're not paying close attention to it, whether it be a purse, a wallet or a cell phone,” Lt. Steve Cooper, of Charleston police, said.
Police said you may want to also check your credit report and never carry sensitive documents like your Social Security card and birth certificate, because, as Legg now knows, people are out there, waiting for victims to let down their guard.
