Some public four-year higher education institutions in West Virginia are seeing declines in enrollment.
The Charleston Gazette reported that preliminary data show West Virginia University's enrollment for the fall semester is down about 200 students, or 0.8 percent, compared to the 2012 fall semester.
Associate vice president Brenda Thompson said WVU has tried to reduce the size of its freshman class to ease strain on the school.
Marshall University's fall enrollment is down 2 percent.
Bluefield State College and Fairmont State and West Liberty universities also report enrollment declines.
Glenville State College is projecting a flat enrollment.
Meanwhile, enrollment is up at West Virginia State University. The number of freshmen increased more than 48 percent from 2012.
