A Marshall University basketball player appeared in court Thursday for a pretrial hearing on a misdemeanor battery charge.
Police said Elijah Pittman severely beat a fellow student, Mazen Younis, in October 2012.
The victim was knocked unconscious, suffered a concussion and a broken nose after police said he tried to break up a fight between Pittman and his girlfriend.
Younis faced his alleged attacker for the first time since last year at the hearing. "It is the first time I've seen him face to face since that happened. The feelings I had was you know ma'am, I just want justice and really I just had a sense of anger, and I hope things happen over here, you know, get the ball rolling at least," he said.
Cabell County Circuit Judge Al Ferguson revealed Pittman tested positive on a recent court-mandated drug test.
"If you turn out positive again, you aren't going to be on the basketball court," Ferguson told Pittman. "You're going to be in jail."
If he is convicted, Pittman is facing a maximum sentence of a year in jail.
