Huntington , Cabell County , West Virginia
A group of homeless people in Huntington was forced to move from the Ohio riverbank, so the city can redevelop the area.
The area known as "Tent City" is now vacant. About a dozen homeless people lived there during the summer, but are now trying to find shelter in town. Peggy Mills, 19, is expecting a boy. She's one of many who lived on the riverbank, and said she is hoping for the best.
"I know one thing,” Mills said. “When he gets here, we won't be living on the street. We're doing the best we can to get a place. I just want to be a good example to him. That's my life, me, my blood. I made that and want the best for him."
Sam Braxton and his Alpha Tau Omega brothers are bringing awareness to the homeless problem in Cabell County. the "ATO Goes Homeless" event is a week long challenge. The brothers live in cardboard boxes for 10 hours at a time.
"Every hour sleeping on these boxes makes you appreciate what you have at home and what you've been blessed with your whole life," Braxton said.
While the young men of ATO simulate what it's like to be homeless and raise money for the cause, Peggy Mills and her boyfriend live on the streets for real. Mills said she hopes for the best for her unborn child.
"I don't want him to be out here on the streets you know, not knowing what he's going to eat or the next day if he's going to get a shower," she said
Some resources available for the homeless in Cabell County include The Harmony House, which is a day shelter. There's also the Huntington City Mission, as well as the First Steps Program helping people transition from the streets to society.
