Williamson, Mingo County , West Virginia
Some members of the public called for the resignation of the Mingo County prosecutor during a heated county commission meeting Wednesday morning.
They want Michael Sparks to resign in the wake of the federal public corruption probe in Mingo County that indicted the county's only judge, Mike Thornsbury. An ethics probe is examining whether or not Sparks was too slow to speak out about irregularities. Thornsbury is accused of using his position to bring criminal charges against a romantic rival.
Sparks claimed some of the speakers are linked to political rivals. He said he will not resign. The county commission declined to get involved.
Meanwhile, the chief tax deputy in Mingo County has been named as the interim sheriff.
Pam Dixon will serve in the interim position. She will take over for Rosie Crum, the widow of Eugene Crum, who was shot to death in downtown Williamson.
Four applicants have applied for the position - Lt. Randy Hatfield, Sgt. James Smith, David Stratton and Larry Ferguson.
The permanent sheriff will be named Sept. 18.
