A Charleston murder investigation is being thrown into the national spotlight and a local forensic psychologist is taking front and center stage.
Investigation Discovery is taking a look at the Mallo case and is calling the family “one of the most disturbing families to ever step foot in Charleston.” The network is profiling the family in its series "Evil Kin."
In June 2009, Charleston police said Thomas Mallo, then 14, stabbed his elderly neighbor, Phyllis Phares, to death.
During that investigation, detectives opened the doors to “unspeakable secrets” inside the Mallo house on Charleston’s West Side.
Dr. David Clayman was recommended to the network by former Assistant Prosecutor Maryclaire Akers to provide insight as a forensic psychologist who was heavily involved in that case. When filmmakers were in Charleston earlier this year, they talked to neighbors, detectives and Clayman about the case. The series producer of "Evil Kin" said he was so impressed with the extent of Clayman’s expertise that the show asked him to provide insight in three other cases being profiled on the series.
Clayman said he doesn't really ever have a chance "to kind of look at a case and think about the whys and the wheres and this was a really fun part of taking all of my years of experience, 30 years of doing forensics and being able to provide some expert input into this series. And for them to be willing to have me come into Washington, D.C., now going to be three times to be on the air with them when they have access to people all over the United States is really something that no matter how big an ego you might have when it really does happen, it's pretty humbling."
Clayman will make his first appearance on the show 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, on Investigation Discovery.
The show featuring the Mallo family will air at 9 p.m. Sept. 18.
