St. Albans , Kanawha County , West Virginia
People waiting for a World War II ship to sail by the St. Albans boat ramp Thursday were shocked to see a truck and trailer plunge into the Kanawha River while trying to launch a powerboat.
Firefighters were unsure if Robert White of Hurricane lost traction or had a brake failure.
His pickup ended up in ten feet of water until it was fished out by St. Albans Fire Department divers. White got out just before it sank.
“It was a shock to him,” Herb Guthrie of St. Albans said. “It was a shock to everybody that was here watching it because we didn't expect anything like that."
Over the years there have been several similar mishaps at the ramp. This time the boat was cut free before it could sink with the trailer.
